One of the few restaurants in the DC area that serves Portuguese food, Carmello’s & Little Portugal offers a dual menu that includes a short but sweet list of Portuguese eats as well as Italian specialities. Try the Mexilhao a Espanhola or Tapas Mistas appetizers, then move to Frango a Marniheiro (sautéed chicken breast with shrimp and bacon), Lombo de Vaca a Porto (grilled filet mignon in an espresso and port wine sauce) or the lusty and aromatic seafood stew, the Carne de Porco a Alentejana, a heady mixture of pork, clams, and cubed potatoes with garlic and white wine. Have an Italian dessert---there are no Portugese. Crowds here are generally well-heeled and well-dressed, so you may not want to drop by in shorts and a T-shirt. - Gayot
